FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Please click on these links for more information on our preventive screenings:
- 1. WHAT is a CardioVascular SCREENING?
Doctors do not usually order diagnostic examinations on patients without signs or symptoms of disease, and insurance regulations do not allow reimbursement for testing unless there is an appropriate indication. Many cardiovascular diseases, however, are silent, and symptoms may not appear until the problem has reached the advanced stage. Screening exams are a method to check for the presence or absence of vascular disease in an individual who has not yet had symptoms. The exams are similar to complete diagnostic cardiovascular tests, using the same highly trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment, but use abbreviated protocols and have a narrow focus. The idea is to establish whether or not disease is present and then recommend further evaluation, if needed, under the care of a physician.
- 2. WHO Should Have a CardioVascular Screening?
The decision to have a screening is a personal one and should be based on your family history, age and other risk factors.
CIMT HeartRisk Screening is appropriate for those 45 or older, or with significant family history of early heart dieease.
Vascular Screening Package: The following are some of the more common risk factors for Stroke, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) and Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), evaluated in our Vascular Screening Package. Those 50 or older with the following risk factors may benefit from this screening package.
STROKE
- High Blood Pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- High Cholesterol
- Previous Stroke
- Family History of Stroke
- Heart Disease
AAA
- Over 55 Years of Age
- Family History of AAA
- Smoking History
- High Blood Pressure
PAD
- High Blood Pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- High Cholesterol
- Family History of PAD
- Heart Disease
EF Echo Screening is for those interested in the pumping ability of their heart, and the risk of Sudden Cardiac Death from a low EF. Those over 45 and/or with a family or personal history of heart disease are good candidates for this evaluation. Know Your "EF" like you know your cholesterol and other numbers for your health.
Echo Athlete Heart Screening is for athletes 14 to 25. We recommend this program prior to beginning a training season or any strenous training regimen, to identify the most common congenital causes of Sudden Cardiac Death.
- High Blood Pressure
- 3. HOW do I Get the Results?
VASCULAR SCREENING
You will be given a preliminary report with an explanation of the findings by the Vascular Sonographer upon completion of your vascular screening. The screening will then be reviewed and interpreted by a board certified vascular surgeon. A signed final report will be mailed to you within one week of your exam(s). We encourage you to share and discuss this report with your physician.
ECHO SCREENING
The screening will be reviewed and interpreted by a board certified cardiologist. A signed final report will be mailed to you within one week of your exam. We encourage you to share and discuss this report with your physician.
CIMT HEARTRISK SCREENING
The screening will be reviewed and interpreted by our medical director, a board certified vascular surgeon. A signed final report will be mailed to you within one week of your exam. We encourage you to share and discuss this report with your physician.
- 4. WHAT IS CIMT HeartRisk Program?
KNOW YOUR VASULAR AGE AND YOUR RISK OF HEART DISEASE
- Coronary artery disease is the #1 cause of death for both men and women.
- For many the first sign of heart disease is heart attack of death.
- For most people, it is preventable.
Midwest Ultrasound, a Cincinnati based company since 1983 and a national leader in cardiac and vascular ultrasound, has developed a coronary heart disease (CHD) risk assessment program using CIMT to determine your vascular age.
Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT), an ultrasound test of the carotid arteries in the neck, is a measure of the amount of plaque build-up in the arteries and can determine your vascular age.
This program is only available through Midwest Ultrasound.
The results of our CIMT HeartRisk Program can help your doctor reduce your risk of heart disease.
This test is painless and is available only at our Kenwood facility. It takes about 30 minutes and its cost of $135 includes a detailed report by our medical director, Dr. Peter Podore, a board certified vascular surgeon.
This test is appropriate for individuals aged 45 and older, or for those younger with known family history of heart disease or other risk factors.
The earlier you know your risk, the sooner you can make a difference in your vascular health.

- 5. WHAT Types of Screenings are Available?
Midwest Ultrasound offers several screening evaluations for Cardiovascular Health:
VASCULAR SCREENING PACKAGE
- Stroke Risk (Measuring Carotid Artery Blockage)
The carotid arteries are the main blood supply lines to the brain. The buildup of a fatty substance called plaque can partially or completely block these arteries. This blockage, if severe, can significantly increase the risk of stroke.
- Aneurysm Risk (Measuring the Abdominal Aorta)
The aorta is the largest artery in the body, supplying blood to the abdomen, pelvis and legs. An abnormal enlargement caused by weakening of the arterial wall is called an aneurysm. A large aneurysm in this artery can rupture, a condition that is often fatal.
- Peripheral Arterial Disease or PAD (Measuring Blood Pressure in the Ankles and Arms)
Arterial blockage from plaque can also develop in the legs, resulting in reduced blood flow. This can limit the ability to walk and, if severe enough, could result in ulcers, gangrene, or amputation. PAD is also an indicator of likely having coronary artery disease (CAD), blockage in the heart arteries.
CIMT HeartRisk SCREENING
- Measures the thickness of the carotid artery with ultrasound and special computer software
- Collect risk factors (bring your last cholesterol and blood sugar labs if you have them)
- Generate a Detailed Report of your Risk for Heart Attack or Cardiac Death
- Read by a Board-Certified Vascular Surgeon- includes recommendations for you and your doctor
ECHO HEART SCREENING
- Measures your "Ejection Fraction" or the hearts pumping ability
- Low EF places you at higher risk for Sudden Cardiac Death
- Read by a Board-Certified Cardiologist
ECHO ATHLETE HEART SCREENING
- Checks for Many Causes of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) in Athletes
- These Anatomic Factors may be Hard to Detect by Physical Exam
- Read by a Board-Certified Cardiologist
- Stroke Risk (Measuring Carotid Artery Blockage)
- 6. HOW are Screening Exams Performed?
CAROTID ARTERY SCREENING AND ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM (AAA) SCREENING
For these tests, you will lie on your back on an exam table. The Vascular Sonographer will apply a small amount of ultrasound gel to your abdomen and/or neck. An ultrasound transducer is moved painlessly over the area to acquire images and assess blood flow.
For the abdominal screening (AAA), we ask that you fast for six hours prior to your test and eat a light meal the night before. You may take your medications on your regular schedule with water. For the carotid artery exam there is no preparation needed-just wear a loose, open-collar shirt or blouse.
PERIPHERAL ARTERY SCREENING
For this test, you will remove your shoes and socks/stockings and lie on your back on an exam table. The Vascular Sonographer will use blood pressure cuffs and a special Doppler ultrasound transducer to measure the pressures in each arm and in the arteries of both ankles. A mathematic calculation of these pressures, called an Ankle Brachial Index, will suggest the presence or absence of significant arterial blockage.
